MERA Beach Survey

Survey details

WHAT: In conjunction with other research activities, the MERA Beach and Follow-up surveys are important tools to help us better understand beach recreation and its relationship with public health.

WHY: These types of surveys are commonly used to inform the creation of new guidelines that will help beach management and protect the health of those who visit the beach.

WHO: Scientists from Southern Methodist University and the University of South Florida work in collaboration with scientists from the Costa Rican National Water Lab and students from Costa Rican Universities to execute surveys to people visiting the beach. This effort is supported by non-governmental, non-profit organizations: Fundación MarVia and OneSea.

WHERE: A beach along the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica

WHEN: August – October 2018 and January – March 2019

Beach and follow-up survey participants can elect to enroll in a monthly raffle after completing the follow-up survey to win a plastic-free beach bundle:

  • Polarized sunglasses, with a wooden frame and plastic free! Provided by MERA collaborator, OneSea.Org
  • #Chao plastic glass water bottle, provided by MERA collaborator Foundation MarViva

A total of six raffles will be held and one plastic-free beach bundle will be awarded to the raffle winner the last day of each of the following months: August 2018, September 2018, October 2018, January 2019, February 2019, and March 2019. Winners will be contacted via phone message, Whatsapp message, or email.
